Connecting with Sand, Surf and Yoga

I need to share with you my absolute favourite outdoor activity last weekend!

Stu brings yoga back to nature on the sand at City Beach
Went down to City Beach at about 8:45am on Saturday morning, wandered over the dunes and down onto the sand. There I met up with Stu Watkins and his awesome group of devoted beach yogis who hit the beach most Saturday mornings during summer (dependent on good weather) to follow his practice on the sand.

Stu's Akhanda Yoga Flow is a beautiful chance to get outside, soak up some rays and get in touch with nature. The hour long practice takes you through many traditional yoga poses as well as a few fun combinations that Stu puts together. He always saves some time for free-stylin' so you can do whatever feels natural and right in the moment. There's some additional fun times and giggles too - I've never gone to one of his classes without cracking a massive smile! :)

A gorgeous location and blissful way to start my Saturday
Amazingly enough I have known Stu since we were kids. Perth, as everyone who lives here probably realises, is quite a small and interconnected place! Stu and I both attended Coolbinia Primary school what feels like a very long time ago. But having having common background with him is irrelevant. His manner and grace with everyone he meets is so evident. People gravitate to him and appreciate his calm nature and friendly smile. These beautiful attributes shine through in the way he leads his practice - sharing a soulful message with those who practice in a way which offers thought provoking ideas, fitness and fun!

AKHANDA & VINYASA ASANA YOGA FLOW: Stu's classes incorporate two adaptable styles of yoga and cater to people with all levels of experience. He has taught and practiced all over the globe and travelled to the Himalayas in India to study Akhanda Yoga with its founder, Yogi Vishvketu. Stu is a holistic life coach as well as fitness trainer so you will notice his classes combine the ancient teachings of yoga with the application of modern Western philosophies. The end result is an awesome and effective experience which leaves you feeling inspired and focused on health, well being and balance.

Pilates Strength & Stamina

Hadn't planned to hit a fitness studio today but was visiting a friend Bayswater and happened to drive past the WA Pilates Studio. Parked the car to take a better look and realised they had a Strength & Stamina pilates class starting at 5:45pm. Was an opportunity too good to pass up!

Really pleased to have the chance to check out studios on the 'far side' of town. Living up in Sorrento has meant I often visit studios in the northern suburbs. But obviously this is a blog about Perth and I'm keen to get out and hit classes across the city. And want to keep my readers happy! If you know any cool classes, anywhere in Perth, that you think I should visit let me know and I'll join you for a workout :)

Phil led this 45 minute session at a steady and consistent pace. It was really great to attend a pilates class led by a male instructor. There was a lot of initial focus on stretching and moving your body through the postures which gradually built up into stronger and longer exercises. The title of this class 'Strength and Stamina' was spot on and definitely a great way to end a Monday!

  • DETAILS: Monday evening, 5:45-6:30pm. The WA Pilates Studio, 1070 Beaufort Street, Bedford.
  • COST: $15.00 per casual class
  • TEACHER: Phil
  • BEST BITS: This studio doesn't look like much from the outside but indoors it is lovely, fresh and clean with nice mats, large mirrors and decent equipment.

Saluting the Sun at Yoga Aid

Can you think of three great reasons to start your Sunday right? I could this morning when I went down to Saw Avenue Amphitheatre in Kings Park at 8:00am to participate in the Yoga Aid Challenge 2011.

Do Yoga. Build Community. Support Charity.

Today marked the 5th annual Yoga Aid Challenge Australia. Yoga Aid is an opportunity to connect with your local yoga community at a free 2 hour outdoor yoga class. It is a unique event and is celebrated around the world. Across Australia funds were raised for three valuable charity organisations: Nelune Foundation, Sunnyfield Independence and Barnados.

Reaching up to the sky and saluting the sun!
Although the day started out looking a little overcast and cloudy we were eventually blessed with lovely sunlight peeping out through the clouds. I'm sure the yogis and yoginis in the crowd would attest that the combination of our powers and sun salutations combined brought out the sunshine. In combination with weather conditions, barometric pressure and thermodynamics of course. But who's to say our sun salutations didn't play at least a small part... ;)

Smooth transitions in the yoga flow:
downward facing dog into chataranga
Representatives from the three West Australian lululemon athletica stores were out in force dressed to impress in groove pants and sporting 'currant' tops to share our bright and exciting new season colour. We were pleased to join a number of local West Australians in the iconic Perth landmark that is Kings Park to share our energy, passion and love for yoga.

A massive thanks to everyone who joined, all who fundraised and the excellent teachers who led the group through a mind-blowing 109 sun salutations in the 2 hours from 9:00-11:00am. Hope everyone who was there enjoyed themselves but if you missed out don't worry... I look forward to seeing you next year at Yoga Aid Challenge 2012!

Good vibrations at Bikram on 11/11/11

One minute of silence at 11:00am on November 11, 2011
Lest We Forget
Apparently practicing yoga on 11/11/11 is particularly empowering as it is a date which offers particularly good vibrations. The number 11 is supposedly a power number and in numerology represents intuition, artistic genius and balance. It is also a prime number and has some special mathematical properties since when multiplied by itself it can result in a palindrome (11x11 = 121; 111111x111111 = 12345654321). People scattered across the globe are excited to be married or give birth on this date.

This may all sound very hippy to you, but at the same time.. why not just go along with it? What's wrong with opening your mind to an alternative way of thinking and giving something new a try. Isn't that what the practice of yoga is all about?

If practicality is more your thing then don't forget that November 11th is also a particularly important date in history. Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended World War I (1914-1918). Australians observe a minute of silence at 11:00am in memory of those who died or suffered in armed conflict. I know a number of Australians who also use the quiet time to reflect on how grateful they are to live in such a beautiful country. Try not to wait until next November 11th to reflect and be thankful for all that you have. Lest we forget how fortunate we are.

So I woke up bright and early with, or possibly even before, the sun. Rolled through the morning motions as quick as a flash and jumped in my car to arrive at Bikram Yoga Joondalup in time for the 5:45am class. My lovely colleague joined me in the class led by Karen, an inspirational woman who radiates positive energy wherever she goes.

I have heard people joke about the 'Bikram torture chamber' and I must say practicing for 90 minutes in a sauna-like environment is definitely a challenge. However I thoroughly enjoyed the holistic workout and felt the benefits of the practice on both my body and mind throughout the rest of the day.

Read my post from 28th September 2011 to learn more about the hot, sweaty fun you can get up to at Bikram Yoga Joondalup or just check below for a few quick facts...

  • DETAILS: Friday morning, 5:45-7:15am. Unit 7/200 Winton Rd, Joondalup.
  • COST: $18.00 per casual class.
  • TEACHER: Karen
  • BRING: You'll definitely want to take a large (mat-sized) sweat towel and a large bottle of water.
  • WEAR: As little as possible! You'll soon realise that body shape and size doesn't matter - everyone in every size strips down to minimal clothing in this super hot environment. Tight shorts, hot pants and suitable loose but supportive tanks are available at lululemon athletica Perth City. My personal favorites are the Let It Loose Tank and a pair of Reverse Groove Shorts.
  • BEST BITS: Your muscles warm up extremely quickly in the hot yoga studio and you use muscles you weren't even sure you possessed. Constantly moving for 1.5 hours really gets the blood flowing, builds your stamina and regulates your breathing. Don't forget to rehydrate!!!

Retreat! Retreat!

And by retreat I mean vacation. And by vacation I mean, R-E-L-A-X....!!!

Sunsets over the ocean in Adelaide. Bliss!!!
I recently headed off on a plane to Adelaide for an amazing week long holiday. So many people laughed at me when I said how excited I was about going to such a small Australian city. But I think perhaps it helps to know my context...

I've lived in Perth, Santiago (Chile), London (England) and Toronto (Canada). Can also say without a doubt that I've travelled to over 35 countries and hit up some massive capital cities around the world. These include Rio DeJeniero, Paris, Rome, Dubrovnik, Lima, Mexico City, Reijakvic, Buenos Aires, Madrid, Berlin, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Quebec City and Vancouver, just to name a few. Jealous much?

It's been exotic, adventurous, incredible but at the same time a little exhausting. So to give myself a bit of down time and go exploring in the smaller and more relaxed city of Adelaide was exactly what the doctor ordered!

I took a one week time out from blogging and have been slow getting back into the swing of things. But don't worry, I've still been keeping active. My motto for the trip: Break from fitness? No way! Break from social media? Okaaaaaay...

Pilates for a Healthy Life

Revisited Healthy Life Fitness Centre to use their great facilities and massive upstairs group fitness room. This time decided to check out a pilates class. The teacher, Lisa, was very patient and dedicated effort to explaining and demonstrating each exercise and showing us what not to do. Sounds simple but very important to know because it's often easy to take a shortcut option which will not only minimize the benefit of the exercise but sometimes add additional strain or stress to weak points in the body like your neck and lower back.

Noticed a few familiar faces from the Yoga class I took at this gym a few weeks back. Great to see a few regulars who clearly love this gym and come back time and time again. Based on my experiences I'm happy to say that I'll be back again soon too!

Check below for more info...
  • DETAILS: Thursday morning, 8:15am-9:15pm. Healthy Life Fitness Centre.
  • COST: $17.00 per casual class
  • TEACHER: Lisa
  • BRING: You need to bring along your own mat, a towel to support your head, neck or knees and a water bottle.
  • BEST BITS: Liked that Lisa spent time explaining the postures for the benefit of everyone in the class.

LIVe in store session

Remember how I've told you it's hard to keep up with myself sometimes? Haha I suppose that's what happens when a person goes a million miles an hour. But as a close friend recently told me "Ginny going at any other speed just wouldn't be the real Ginny!" ;)

Fortunately I was able to attend a few exercise classes at my work this week. That's the beauty of working at a store that transforms into a fitness studio after hours. I attended a pilates class with Pippa Hutchinson, Director of LIVe Pilates. Pippa is an incredible teacher, highly motivated and has an awesome sense of humour. If you have a million dollar check she'll make sure you never let it go! Her classes are physically challenging but massively rewarding. You'll walk away sore the next day if you're not careful so be sure to stretch.

Read below for more info on this particular class and to learn more above LIVe Pilates check out my post from 26th September.

Zumba Fitness: A party AND a workout!

Like to party? Sad when the weekend is over and think you can't dance again until next Friday night? Never fear, Zumba is here!

Simone Dodd leads an exciting and upbeat Zumba class every Monday night at Vivace Performance Company in Greenwood. I've gone a few times now and found it a fab way to kick start the week and shake those Monday blues.

She mixes up the Latin inspired soundtrack and keeps the heartbeat racing throughout the hour. Not sure if you count dancing as a workout? Trust me, you'll definitely sweat in her class.

What I love about Simone is her ability to connect with every person she meets. Her personality walks (or generally shimmies!) into a room and everyone around her smiles. The ladies who join her class at Vivace Dance Studio are a mixed range of ages, from around mid 20s to up to about 65! When she came in to teach at lululemon athletica Perth City on Tuesday night the age range was towards the younger end of the spectrum. And yes, you got that right. I joined her for back to back Zumba classes on both Monday and Tuesday this week!

No matter who she is teaching Simone manages to bring out the young, active dance spirit in everyone. Don't believe me? Try her class for yourself! You'll laugh, you'll smile, you'll Zuuuuuumba!

Check out my post from 19th September to learn more about Zumba Fitness and my first experience at Simone's class.

The World's Largest Pilates Class!

So great to see the Perth community getting
active outdoors for a good cause.
On Sunday 23rd October at 9:00am I attended an awesome outdoor event: The World's Largest Pilates Class presented by LIVe Pilates at Langley Park.

The event was an amazing day with the intention of breaking the world record for the World's Largest Pilates class. Although the record wasn't broken the turnout was phenomenal and the weather held up its end of the bargain and stayed sunny. Such a great day!

Say hello to the lululemon athletica
colour coordinated team!
Funds raised from tickets sold at $35 were donated to the Sarah Gapp Cause. Sarah is a Brisbane Law Student who suffered a severe stroke weeks after her 21st birthday and had to have 60% of her cerebellum removed. Since her stroke she has been left with a condition where her mind is perfectly aware but unable to communicate with her body. She has already defied the odds and regained some speech and movement and funds will help her get the medical care she needs to hopefully learn to swallow and walk.

All participants received a gift bag and, obviously, the enjoyment of participating in an outdoor workout while supporting a worthy cause.

Our staff from lululemon athletica perth city teamed up with representatives from our Karrinyup and Cottesloe stores wearing surge colour coordinated clothes while participating in the event. We were so happy to get outside, get active and make a difference in our community.

Congratulations to Pippa and Owen Hutchinson from LIVe Pilates for putting together such a successful event. Hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed the workout!

Starting Saturday at Greenwood Yoga Academy

Signage outside the Greenwood Yoga Academy
Enjoyed a really relaxing start to my Saturday when I headed bright and early to the Greenwood Yoga Academy for a 9:15am yoga practice.

The class was instructed by Margaret, the Owner and Principal Yoga Teacher at Greenwood Yoga Academy, with the assistance of her colleague Eda. It was a wonderful opportunity to stretch and relax, yet still be challenged by some advanced balance poses and learn some new sequences.

I found it to be a real benefit that Eda was available to help out with the class. She continuously moved around the room giving guidance and helping attendees with their alignment while Margaret spoke and demonstrated from the front of the room.

There was a nice vibe to the class, many of whom are repeat visitors and enjoy this weekly practice to kick off their weekend. A few people told me they had been practicing yoga with Margaret for a number of years. Following the class quite a few participants headed across the road to the Wanneroo markets for coffee and invited me to join. A lovely class all around!

Shaking things up at in store Belly Dancing

This evening I had the opportunity to try something really fun, new and different. Belly dancing! It was a complimentary class held for one night only at lululemon athletica perth city. Led by Carolyn Verhoef, belly dance teacher and owner of Outside The Box Organisation Solutions, the hour long class was a fun and different approach to movement which had everyone in the room smiling, shimmying and shaking. Who said exercise always had to be such a routine?!

There are so many fun and exciting elements of working at lululemon athletica perth city. For one I get to wear stretchy pants and sneakers to work, how many people are lucky enough to say that? Another great aspect of my job is in my involvement with the local community and ability to communicate with them the ease and importance of involving fitness in their every day life.

A super simple way for people who work downtown to do this is to come along and get involved in our complimentary in store classes! They currently run for one hour every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night from 6:00-7:00pm. The roster is subject to change and likely to be majorly altered in December over the busy Christmas period. But as I always say, variety is the spice of life and it's good to keep it interesting!

Check below for more info...
  • DETAILS: Tuesday evening, 6:00-7:00pm. Inside the lululemon athletica Perth City store. Shop H127, enex100.
  • COST: Complimentary! The lululemon athletica perth city complimentary class schedule changes weekly. For details about future in-store class timetables check out the website link below.
  • TODAY'S TEACHER: Carolyn
  • BRING: If you happen to own a belly dancing coin belt this would have been a great opportunity to bring it out! The class was taken barefoot and Carolyn was generous enough to provide coin belts to a number of the attendees, which meant no other props or equipment were required. And don't worry ladies, although it is belly dancing there is no expectation to bare your midriff in class. None of us did! Just come dressed in a regular tank or t-shirt.
  • BEST BITS: We got a shimmy and shake! What girl hasn't always wanted to give belly dancing a try? It was a fun experience and definitely not something I'd ever thought to do before. That's the beauty of the lululemon athletica perth city in store classes, they allow you to try something different and see if it suits you. Didn't find the class particularly strenuous but it was worthwhile putting on the bucket list I think!

Striking the balance at Qi Yoga

Following Body Pump my adrenalin was still high and the day was still young. A few weeks back my close friend Pete recommended I join him at Qi Yoga on an upcoming Monday night, so today felt like the perfect day for it.

We arrived slightly early and I had the pleasure of chatting with Fiona, the teacher and founder of Qi Yoga, prior to the class. Her dynamic energy and entrepreneurial spirit is evident immediately, both in her personality and her practice. She has developed Qi Yoga in both London and Australia and travels between the two, teaching and promoting the benefits of her training.

I thoroughly enjoyed the session which ran for just under 1.5 hours and encompassed a rigorous practice followed by a lengthy guided meditation. Found it to be a wonderful combination of body and mind, which when you read below you will understand is the actual intention of Qi Yoga.

QI YOGA is a blend of the 2 ancient healing sciences of Qi Gong and Hatha Yoga to create an enhanced practice. It harnesses your seven chakras, the energy systems of the body, through various physical postures. Tapping on the meridian lines of the body allows blood to flow freely and oxygenate all the cells. This activity, in conjunction with fluid movements and supple joints, helps to clear stagnant energy from the body. The philosophy of Qi Yoga is not affiliated with any religion or deity, it instead focuses on your own self, ancestors, soul and personal goals. It incorporates balance in the union of mind, body and soul.
  • DETAILS: Monday evening, 7:00-8:15pm. Manning Hall, at the corner of Bradshaw Crescent and Jarman Avenue.
  • COST: $16.00 per casual class
  • TEACHER: Fiona
  • BRING: Your own yoga mat. I would also recommend bringing a blanket or cozy scarf to drape over yourself for keeping warm during the guided meditation at the end of practice.
  • BEST BITS: Qi Yoga was different to other yoga practices that I have attended recently, plus I had never experienced the technique of tapping the meridian lines of the body before. I really enjoyed the practice because I believe change and a challenge is always the spice of life!

Getting pumped to start the week

Back at Fitness First this arvo after a pretty full-on day at work. Sometimes the best way to get out all the excess emotion and clear your head after a tough day is just to get into the gym and sweat it out!

It felt like an extra special treat going to Nathan's Body Pump class because he brought such a fun vibe and such positive energy into the room. Everything from singing along to the songs to cracking jokes about his recent trip to Sydney, he definitely delivered on both fitness and fun.

Try to follow the instructors advice but don't forget to listen to your body, if you're affecting your lower back be cautious and make sure you don't push your limits too early. Better to tone and strengthen than lift far beyond your comfort zone and risk doing yourself damage!

I've been to Fitness First a few times recently and have blogged about their Body Pump classes a number of times too. Be sure to read last week's post 'You've got to pump it up' from Monday October 10th for more general info on this fitness option.

Strongly suggest a class with Nathan, haven't experienced that many male group fitness instructors out there but he definitely made me smile!
  • DETAILS: Monday afternoon, 4:30-5:30pm. Fitness First Perth CBD. 166 Murray Street, Perth, 6000.
  • COST: $22.00 per casual class
  • TEACHER: Nathan
  • BRING: Water bottle and sweat towel. Also bring $3.00 in change if you want to rent a locker.
  • BEST BITS: Pump is great because you have the ability to choose your own weights and adjust them for every single routine and muscle group that you work.

Yoga for a Healthy Life

Shakespeare once asked 'what's in a name?' At the Healthy Life Fitness Centre the name just says it all. It's a well laid out gym located right by Whiford City Shopping Centre where people can move about, twist and shout plus (most importantly) sweat it out to raise their fitness levels and develop a healthy life.

Today's class with Sandy was an experienced yoga class and I could definitely tell the difference when I compare it to some of the beginners classes that I have recently attended. Although she began the class slowly and eased us into our practice it was not long until she was asking us to take a complex sun salutation series at our own pace and hold advanced balance poses for significant periods of time.

The Healthy Life Fitness Centre has a really large group fitness room and the class was clearly a popular choice. Sandy had a great rapport with a number of students and although the skill levels varied it was pretty clear that everyone in the room had practiced yoga at least a few times before. Really enjoyed the experience and would definitely go back again!

Check below for more info...
  • DETAILS: Friday morning, 11:15am-12:15pm. Healthy Life Fitness Centre.
  • COST: $17.00 per casual class
  • TEACHER: Sandy
  • BRING: You need to bring along your own mat to this practice. An ideal option is 'The Mat' from lululemon athletica. It is a serious yoga mat with super-grippy PU (polyurethane) top layer to stop you slipping during your power and flow yoga class. This ultra-thick mat has four different layers of rubber and PU so gives excellent cushioning for your knees, hips and spine. It is treated with an additive called ultra-freshTM which prevents the growth of mildew and bacteria. 'The Mat' is clearly called 'The Mat' for a reason! ;)
  • BEST BITS: This class was just great but I'd say definitely for advanced yogis rather than first timers. Everything from shoulder stands to self-led sun salutations, the group was definitely kept on their toes!

Change of Pace at The Yoga Space

I found last Wednesday's 45 minute Vinyasa yoga practice at The Yoga Space so enjoyable that I decided to head back over there today and bring my work colleague Jess with me to join in the fun!

One nice thing about yoga is the ability to share the benefits of your practice. During class you are expected to tune in to your own body and focus on your own movements. But before and after class you'll generally notice a real variety of actions and attitudes in any given studio. Some people clearly love to share, engage and interact with the people around them both pre and post-yoga. Others remain quiet and meditative before, during and after their practice. Whatever your method, it's totally cool and it's totally up to you. Just be sure to own your practice (by 'own' I mean 'make it your own!') and get out of it what you need.

Today I was seeking company, motivation and to share a practice I loved with someone who I knew would appreciate it. Bringing Jess along to this session with me was the ideal way to share the benefits of my practice in the company of a great friend!

Unfortunately Samantha informed us today that her 4:30pm session on Wednesday afternoons will no longer be running at this studio. However she will still be leading some classes at The Yoga Space, as well as in other locations too. Therefore I won't share the details of this class below (you can check out my post from last Wednesday 5th October if you're super keen) but stay tuned and I will hunt down another of Samantha's awesome classes in upcoming weeks!

Pilates treasure trove at The Cove

Found myself with a bit of time to kill downtown this evening after work and before an event I was scheduled to attend in the Perth CBD. What better to fill the hours productively and boost my energy levels than a quick workout?!

I didn't want to get all hot and sweaty but did want to move, stretch, tone and strengthen.  Headed over to The Cove Fitness Club and joined in a 45 minute pilates class lead by Christiane in the upstairs workout room. For my needs today this was the perfect solution!

The pilates class was slow and rhythmic compared to other classes I have take. In fact it almost felt like hypnolates with the music, drawn out movements and repetition. Christiane led the small class through the movements with good guidance and many explanations on how to hold postures correctly. She focused on very small movements to activate deep core muscles, and led a seemingly gentle but effective class.

Read my post from September 26th to learn more about pilates in general, and check below for more info on this specific class at The Cove Fitness Club.
  • DETAILS: Tuesday afternoon, 5:15-6:00pm. The Cove Fitness Club. Perth CBD, 6000.
  • COST: $15.00 per casual class
  • TEACHER: Christiane
  • BRING: Nothing required but a smile!
  • BEST BITS: Found this class relaxing and would recommend it as a way to activate your core and muscle movement after a long day of sitting behind your desk at an office.

You've got to Pump It Up!

Another blast from the past this evening when I decided to hit up a Body Pump class at Fitness First in the Perth CBD.

Back in my uni days I had quite a soft spot for Body Pump and Body Combat. Living at college across the road from UWA campus was really amazing. It was quite epic to be able to wake up dazed and confused on a weekend morning and be able to stumble across the road to the gym, then back across the road for breakfast an hour later feeling drained and sweaty, but at the same time energised and ready to start the day!

Tonight was no different, but already starting to think I might have gone a little too hard. Will no doubt be hurting tomorrow! Good pain though, if you can't tell you've worked out then you probably haven't. However that being said, if you are new to Body Pump then definitely go easy on the weights and don't push yourself to the max. It's better to use smaller weights but lift them correctly without straining your back, wrists, knees or other joints. Light weights help you tone too especially if you do lots of reps!

Like I mentioned last week, the cool thing about Fitness First is that once you're in the door of the gym you can attend a class and then go on to do a work out, or even do two back-to-back classes. All for the same price, the casual rate of $22.00. Last week I took the 5:30pm Body Combat class that lasted an hour. You could potentially start with that and then follow it up with the Body Pump class I took tonight. If you're really keen that is... It'd be a hectic workout but quite a good balance since the Combat provides great cardio that helps you work up your heart rate and the Pump goes on to tone you up with reps and weights.

BODY PUMP is a weight-based group fitness program performed to music using free weights, barbells and an aerobic step. Each class entails 8 plus a warm up and cool down exercise. The focus is endurance and is achieved by repetitions. Apparently the original concept of Body Pump was intended to get men involved in aerobics classes.

  • DETAILS: Monday evening, 6:30-7:30pm. Fitness First Perth CBD. 166 Murray Street, Perth, 6000.
  • COST: $22.00 per casual class
  • TEACHER: Jacinda
  • BRING: Nothing was required but I brought a sweat towel to cover up the mat for a few sit-ups at the end of class. I suppose just bring a rational attitude... don't try to lift too much on your first attempt at Body Pump or you'll walk away feeling mighty worse for wear. I'm hoping that tomorrow's aches and pains will be good ones.
  • BEST BITS: Felt nice to do reps with weights for something different. Definitely felt the toning benefits almost immediately.

Space for you at The Yoga Space

Really enjoyed a calm and quiet 45 minute Vinyasa Yoga practice at The Yoga Space on Hay Street this afternoon.

The Yoga Space is a cute little upstairs studio just off Hay Street, great location because it's only a super quick Red Cat ride or short walk from downtown Perth City. Since I'm currently working shifts I was able to break away a little early today and catch this class. There was only three of us there, but as I left the 5:30pm class was arriving and there must have been at least 20 people lining up for that later 90 minute session. It's clearly a popular venue!

It was lovely to participate in a brief practice in the early afternoon. Was also great to have such a tiny class so we each got lots of one-on-one attention from the teacher, my postures and alignment definitely benefitted from that. Plus I left the studio when it was still light and sunny outside, so my mood was definitely brightened too. A refreshing experience all around!

VINYASA translates to 'breath synchronised movement' and is a practice which dynamically links breath and movement. The teacher instructs the class to move from one posture to the next on an inhale or exhale, ideally allowing each pose to flow together. Most vinyasa classes will include the simple cat-cow stretch as well as sun salutations which are slightly more complex.

Check below for more info...
  • DETAILS: Wednesday afternoon, 4:30-5:15pm. The Yoga Space. 11/1251 Hay Street, West Perth.
  • COST: $10.00 for a 45 minute class
  • TEACHER: Samantha
  • BRING: Everything is supplied by The Yoga Space so there's no need to bring a mat. But as always with yoga be sure to wear an outfit that offers you a lot of flexibility, freedom of movement and good coverage.
  • BEST BITS: Since my previous yoga sessions have all been 90 minute classes I really appreciated this 45 minute short and peaceful practice. A great choice for beginners with a patient and supportive teacher.

History in the making: Wise Words This Week

Recently remembered that my intention was to have a new set of 'Wise Words This Week' posted each Monday morning so that my readers can be constantly surprised, delighted and inspired...

But the Wise Words of the Week mean so much to me. They are quotes I've picked up from friends, family and loved ones along the way. Would hate to see them disappear from my site all together each time a new set of Wise Words is published.

So I'm starting a history of 'Wise Words This Week'. Each week when I change over the Wise Words I'll update this section... It'll end up a dynamic database of epic catch phrases and quotes from my nearest and dearest. Cool huh? ;)

Combat in the City

Decided to get physical and check out another Body Combat class tonight after work at Fitness First in Perth City. Was interesting to see the gym so tightly packed! I suppose being located right on Murray Street and going there straight after office hours at 5:30pm on a week day it makes sense, but was a bit of an eye opener for me. Loads of people downtown hit up the gym for an end of day workout!

The Body Combat class was totally packed, I'd say there were more than 45 people in the room. Definitely made for a big and busy group. The teacher was full of fire and fury as she bounded around the stage screaming encouragement and asking the group for more power, more energy, more, more, MORE. It was quite a mind-blowing experience as a follow up to my recent stint of yoga and Zumba but it felt good to smash it out with a variety of jab cross, uppercut, kicks and hooks. Definitely worked up a sweat tonight!

Check below for more info...
  • DETAILS: Monday evening, 5:30-6:30pm. Fitness First Perth CBD. 166 Murray Street, Perth, 6000.
  • COST: $22.00 per casual class (but apparently once you're in the door of the gym you can attend class, then do a work out or even do 2 back-to-back classes. In theory. If you're not too exhausted after just the one!)
  • TEACHER: Jacinda
  • BRING: You'll definitely want a sweat towel and a water bottle for this one!
  • BEST BITS: Totally different levels of energy and aggression to the last few fitness options I've tried. If you're dealing with a lot of pent up anger or frustration come along to this class and punch, kick and upper-cut it out of your system!

Back to Bec for more PT

Although most of the time I believe that change is good, familiarity also has its advantages.

Having felt a little maxed out from the massively varied fitness options I've attempted over the past few weeks I decided to re-group with my close girlfriends and again visit their PT, Bec, who runs training sessions in East Vic Park. This was literally a last minute decision to join in and I was swiftly picked up en-route to training and switched outfits in the carpark. Was well worth the effort though.

Personal trainers are a great choice because they provide variety in the exercises they set out for you, but continuity in the fact that your general expectations of the session can be the same. The trainer gets to know you personally, then tailors your training program to suit your areas of strength... and weakness.

That's right, you heard me. Weakness. Don't be fooled into thinking that getting a personal trainer is a great way to only do the fun exercises that you really enjoy. Their role is to motivate, even push, you into challenging yourself and exceeding the limitations you may perceive are there.

It was great to see Bec again, to combine that familiar recognition element with a variety of new exercises. This time we held weights above our head and in front of us while running and side stepping plus did sit-ups, planks and squats.

Like I said, personal trainers do push you. In a good way ;)

"Ommmm" at Yoga Om in North Perth

If you haven't noticed I've been testing out a LOT of incredible 'finding fitness' options in Perth in recent weeks. I've even already started to exceed my own expectations, smashing far beyond the number of classes I envisioned I would attend. Which is awesome of course. It's always good to have a goal, then a stretch goal, and be able to actually start to see progress towards achieving it!

However another thing that is extremely important is to learn balance and moderation. Admittedly not always two of my most fine-tuned attributes. As a self-confessed moderate-to-high 'full steam ahead' personality I have at times struggled to draw the line, learn to say no and realise when enough is enough.

For one thing I can't actually seem to blog fast enough to keep up with the fitness classes I've been going to! To date I've attended 9 completely new classes all over Perth city in a mere 2.5 weeks. At the same time as starting new full-time work. For me my work and my 'finding fitness' intentions are very well aligned, but still that's a lot for anyone to take on in a super quick time frame.

So to be honest I think today at Yoga Om I actually hit my limit... The North Perth venue is a really gorgeous space, with a high ceiling and a raised stage for the yogi who leads the practice to demonstrate from. The spiced smell of incense drifted through the room and the lighting against the wooden floorboards was lovely. Just such a shame the studio is so nearby a main road with constant traffic distractions. Which in addition to my aching body and splitting headache really hindered my ability to get the most out of this lovely practice.

I suppose the art of yoga practice involves elevating your consciousness above such obstacles. But it is also about striking the right balance. I should have realised earlier that my aches and pains were more than just general post-fitness tenderness and actually quite extreme strains from days on end of overdoing it. I suppose this practice made this fact quite evident to me, which in itself is the kind of clarity and realisation that a good yoga practice should deliver. So overall? A strenuous success by all accounts :)

Check below for more info...
  • DETAILS: Thursday evening, 5:45-7:15pm. Yoga Om. Ste C4, 32 Endeavour Road, Hillaries 6025.
  • COST: $18.00 per class on a casual basis
  • TEACHER: Sava
  • BRING: Nothing required as the venue supplies yoga mats, blocks, straps and blankets. But it's always nice to bring an extra layer like a vinyasa scarf or cosy jacket to snuggle into after savasana.
  • BEST BITS: I liked that the teacher was elevated on a slight platform stage in front of us so we could follow each pose. The hour and a half long practice was a constant journey through a range of poses, each slightly more ambitious than the next. With my aching joints and feelings of utter exhaustion I did find the practice a challenge, but definitely a fulfilling one.

Hot, hot, HOT at Bikram Yoga Joondalup

If you're hunting for a way to seriously sweat it all out I definitely suggest giving Bikram yoga a try.

I visited Bikram Yoga Joondalup at 9:30am this morning looking for an energizing kick start to my day. I definitely got what I came for. The class is lead in a heated room so the minute you step inside you feel like you're entering a sauna. I've tried hot pilates while I was living in Toronto, but the practice of bikram yoga is quite new to me. I believe the classes always follow the same 26 postures so it took a little while to adjust to teachers instructions and I spent quite a bit of time scanning my eyes around the room trying to follow what was going on. There seemed to be a lot of rules and directions given out, but I suppose they need to make sure everyone is doing the postures correctly to avoid injuries.

I think the major benefits for me actually became evident later in the day. Throughout the practice I felt a little overwhelmed by the complicated poses and suffocating heat. Especially when we were directed NOT to wipe any sweat away from our face! However a few hours later, after showering of course, I felt refreshed, rejuvenated and invigorated. Which means the practice worked wonders I suppose!

BIKRAM YOGA is a holistic workout in a heated room. You are led through a series of 26 postures as well as breathing exercises which begin and end the 90 minute class. The intention is to build stamina and strength, improve posture, develop muscle tone and strengthen your immune system. The heat encourages sweating which eliminates toxins from your body and the meditative aspect of the practice improves your breathing, aids evening sleep and helps to reduce stress. A full body and mind workout.

Check below for more info...
  • DETAILS: Wednesday morning, 9:30-11:00am. Unit 7/200 Winton Rd, Joondalup.
  • COST: $18.00 per casual class (however they currently have a special introductory offer which costs $20 for 10 consecutive days. Seriously good value if you have time to pack in a lot of classes.)
  • TEACHER: Lisa
  • BRING: You'll definitely want to take a large (mat-sized) sweat towel and a water bottle or 2 for this one!
  • BEST BITS: It's quite an incredible feeling to remain in a hot yoga room for 1.5 hours constantly moving. Following the practice you leave the room feeling light as air and, after a much-needed shower, you'll spend the rest of the day feeling fresh with a healthy glow.

Gettin' Fiesty at In Store Zumba

What a great way to end my work day. I finished up my shift and literally slipped straight into a Zumba class which actually took place in the venue where I work.

I suppose that's a point, I haven't even explained to you what I do yet. I'm currently working as an Educator at the lululemon athletica Perth City store. As an Educator I have intimate contact with the athletic community and all of our guests on a daily basis. It is an interactive, exciting, challenging and dynamic environment where I'm encouraged to take initiative, multi-task and be an entrepreneur.

We are encouraged to set goals and dream big. Beyond big. HUGE! It is an exciting, forward-thinking brand and offers an excellent work culture that I am proud to be a part of.

One aspect of my role is to coordinate and encourage community participation in our brand and culture.  This is achieved in a number of ways, one of which is our in-store classes. Currently held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00-7:00pm* the classes range across a variety fitness options and in the past have included yoga, pilates, zumba, boxfit, extend bar and even belly dancing!

Tonight's class was a Zumba fitness session run by a lady who goes by the name of 'Fiesty'. I've explained Zumba in a few previous posts so flick back through those if you're keen to learn more. We packed around 20 people into the store tonight (maximum we've squeezed in so far has been 37..!) It was great to see lots of ladies having a big grin and dancing the night away. Like I said at the start, what a fun way to end my work day!

Check below for more info...
  • DETAILS: Tuesday evening, 6:00-7:00pm. Inside the lululemon athletica Perth City store. Shop H127, enex100. If you walk in from St George's Terrace come up the escalators from the Greenhouse and Woolworths. (*Please note: class schedule changes weekly. For details about future in-store class timetables check out the website link below.)
  • COST: Complimentary! lululemon athletica Perth city offers a range of complimentary in-store classes each week. We love offering a venue where we can witness first-hand the Perth city community getting active and living long, healthy and fun lives!
  • TODAY'S TEACHER: Fiesty
  • BRING: Wear sneakers, bring a water bottle and a workout outfit you can bounce around in. No mat or props are required for Zumba, so it's super easy to come along straight after work.
  • BEST BITS: Zumba is always fun and a bit of a laugh. It takes a little coordination but the music keeps you motivated and no-one is there to judge you. Be prepared to smile, it's all about dancing out your excess energy!

Livin' it up at LIVe Pilates

Great start to my week with a Monday morning matwork pilates class at LIVe Pilates.

The class incorporated a lot of balancing on rollers, stretching with elastics, roll ups and (of course) mat work. Our teacher Nicole was very positive and encouraging, since there were only five ladies in our class today she was able to give each of us feedback and individual attention. Also because the class was small we were able to face our mats towards the teacher and mirror wall. I really liked that Nicole joined in many of the exercises with us, it was great to have a demonstration of how the movements should be done correctly.
The entrance to Liv Pilates Hillaries

I find pilates incredible for my posture and core strength. My love of pilates can be accredited to my awesome teacher Anna Harris at Moksha Yoga Uptown in Toronto, Canada. For my Toronto buddies be SURE to check out one of Anna's pilates classes or booty camps ASAP! www.annaharris.ca Love your work Anna, continue to build that empire lady!

PILATES is a physical fitness system and body conditioning routine that builds flexibility, strength, coordination and endurance in the abdominals, arms, legs and back. Joseph Pilates developed a system of mat exercises in first half of the 20th century with the intention of developing controlled movement from a strong core. Today, in addition to mat work, pilates can also use a range of apparatuses for progressive resistance training.

Check below for more info...
  • DETAILS: Monday morning, 9:30-10:30am. Liv Pilates Hillaries. Ste C4, 32 Endeavour Road, Hillaries 6025.
  • COST: $22.00 per class on a casual basis (cheaper if purchased as set of 10 classes or more, see website below for more details)
  • TEACHER: Nicole
  • BRING: Nothing required as Liv Pilates supplies mats and all props such as rollers, elastics and fitballs. I recommend wearing tight-fitting crops (lululemon athletica wunder under crops or astro crops are ideal) in preference to long pants as there was a number of balancing on roller exercises. You don't want to have to continuously hitch up your trouser legs or risk getting your feet caught up and tripping on them.
  • BEST BITS: I liked that we faced the teacher and mirror so we didn't have to strain our necks to check our postures were correct. Was fun to practice stability on the roller, was my first time ever using a roller and was surprised and delighted at the focus required to stay upright. Something new to conquer!

A rusty old ride

I recently discovered an old bike in the back of our garden shed. Covered in cobwebs and rusted almost beyond repair. Almost... but not quite ;)

Bikes have never ever been my thing, it took me years to learn to ride and after a number of accidents on both regular bikes and motorbikes on my cousin's farm I'm super cautious of anything that requires balancing on two wheels.

However, those who know me well know just how much I love a challenge. In fact I'm generally the girl who chooses the hard road (rather than than the easy one) time and time again. Mid 2007 I camped for three months through Europe in rather rustic conditions. We fit two people into a one man tent! A few years later I again travelled, solo this time, on Euroline buses and packed in as much quality sightseeing as possible on a shoestring budget. On my visit to New York a friend gave me a book filled with cheap and FREE things to do in New York City. Still remember how outrageously excited I was. Must be one of the only girls in the world who wanted to go to New York and NOT spend money... hahaha.

Reading back through this I realise I sound like a total cheap-skate. But I honestly believe there's more to it than that. I like the challenge of conquering things on a budget. I like believing when there's a will, there's a way. I like the feeling of actually earning the right to enjoy an experience. Monetarily, physically, mentally and emotionally earning it.

In a nutshell I like a challenge I guess!

The point is, when I found this rusted up old bike I was excited. I saw it as an opportunity to challenge myself. With a little help from my dad we got the brakes oiled up, scraped off a little rust and I took her for a spin. The seat's a little low and the chain clunks on and off regularly, but all in all the bike works. Will take longer to cycle to the train station than take the bus each way, but I am on a 'finding fitness' challenge after all.

So the plan is to buy myself a bike lock (hey, a girl's gotta spend SOME money!) ;) and cycle to the train station when I can. Due to my rather irrational bike riding phobia I will set the initial bike to train station goal as once a fortnight... As we push on towards the hot summer months I may feel the urge to substitute bike riding for something less sweltering. But keep posted for my cycling progress and updates. Wish me luck!

Frantic Friday calmed by Yoga

This morning began at a crazy pace... Slept through my alarm and frantically raced to the bus which then ended up being 20 minutes behind schedule. This meant I also missed my train. Not a great way to start the day.

Luckily enough I did factor in a bit of extra travel time and was still able to arrive for the mid-morning Beginners/General yoga class at The Yoga Company in Subiaco.

Don't be fooled by the title... this 'beginners' class definitely caught me by surprise! I met up with my friend, colleague and fellow yoga-lover Esther at the studio and I'm quite sure we both expected a gentle, peaceful and calming start to our morning. Needless to say we both really enjoyed the class but definitely left humbled by the flexibility and core strength expected of us throughout the session.

Lessons learned today? Always provide myself a big enough 'time buffer' before work or play so that even if it all goes wrong I still have at least a few extra minutes up my sleeve to make it right again. Also learned to never underestimate the complexities of a yoga practice. Although yoga is meditative and restorative, it is also extremely challenging - both mentally and physically. If you have somehow developed misconceptions about yoga being "easy" then I suggest you make your way to Hala's studio and be prepared to change your tune.

YOGA originated in India as a physical, mental and spiritual discipline with the aim of attaining tranquility and spiritual insight. A yogi is someone who practices yoga or has a high level of commitment to the yoga philosophy. If you are able to incorporate yoga into all aspects of your life on regular basis you could be a yogi too!

Check below for more info...
  • DETAILS: Friday morning, 9:30-11:00am. The Yoga Company. 400 Roberts Road (corner of Station Street), Subiaco.
  • COST: $20.00 per 1.5 hour class
  • TEACHER: Hala Bitdorf
  • BRING: Nothing required. I brought my own mat and towel, however Hala provides mats, belts, chairs, blocks and blankets at her studio. Definitely bring comfy shoes and warm, loose clothes to wear post-practice. so you can drift out of the studio with a cosy and content soul.
  • BEST BITS: The practice went for 1.5 hours and I felt mentally and physically challenged throughout.

Another night of Zumba

I had so much fun at my Monday night Zumba class I immediately felt the urge to dance again! I met a lovely lass named Jodie at Simone's class earlier this week. She's a self-confessed Zumba addict and has recently been scoping out Zumba classes around the city. I was very excited when she sent me the contact details for another local Zumba option and couldn't pass up the chance to check it out. Thanks Jodie! :)

Tonight was a very quick-paced class. I found it really interesting to see how different this Zumba session was from the one a few nights back! A good reminder that not only is it important to find a fitness style that works for you, but also a teacher who you can really connect with and draw energy from. My major inspirations for leading a fitter, healthier lifestyle come from the awesome friendships I made overseas with fellow fitness fanatics and my instructors. More to come on that in an upcoming post... :)

This Zumba teacher ran his class from a stage platform at the front of the room, definitely a plus considering how many people were participating. He moved in a super upbeat way but unfortunately we couldn't really hear his directions over the music and he was extremely quick to change moves. Which just meant that the class was often a little out of sync. There was little-to-no breaks between the tracks... but hey, no rest for the wicked right?! It's good to be pushed to move fast. Gotta shake off those excess calories I consumed on the bus ride home from work! ;)

Read my post from Monday 19th September to learn more about Zumba in general. I've also laid out some fast facts below for more info on this particular class...
  • DETAILS: Wednesday night, 7:00-8:00pm. Whitfords Senior Citizens Centre. 15 Banks Avenue, Whitfords.
  • COST: $11.00 per class [Apparently you can attend another one hour 'bar' fitness class the hour prior starting at 6:00pm. The bars and equipment are provided for you and the combined cost of the two hours is only $13.00 total. Bargain!]
  • TEACHER: ...
  • BRING: A sweat towel. Lots of bouncing up and down in this class, if you have a knee brace I'd suggest bringing it along. Wear comfy sneakers and a pair of shorts with lots of give or some good quality crops since there's lots of bending and super fast paced twirling. I wore long pants and regretted it, got far too hot.
  • BEST BITS: The venue is BIG which was good because the class was busy, around 30 women but only 1 bloke in attendance. C'mon boys... pick up your game. ;)

Zumba Fitness - Lovin' Latina beats!

Just worked up a sweat and danced up a storm at an awesomely pumping Zumba Fitness class!

The teacher Simone brought real character, flair and most importantly RHYTHM to the room. All while leading the class with a massive smile and a party attitude to boot.

The class was filled with loads of red-hot salsa style steps mixed in with shimmies, hip-swinging and beat-busting moves. The awesome Latino soundtrack really set the scene. Half-way through the class I honestly felt pretty keen to get out there and hit up the dance floors clubbing with a few of my 'new moves' ;)

Despire the grim weather outside the class was pumping, with around 15 ladies attending tonight. Apparently there's often even more participants. The class did have a slightly older dynamic than I had anticipated, with attendees ages ranging from mid-20s to early-60s. Never fear though, not a single one of them took a passive back seat. Everyone got really into it and gave the class and awesome dance effort. Thanks Simone, I could tell by the energy in the room that the ladies loved it. I sure did!

ZUMBA is a Latin-inspired dance fitness program which some keen beans have labelled 'exercise in disguise' ;) Dancer and choreographer Alberto "Beto" Perez incorporated elements of samba, salsa, merengue, mambo, belly dance, hip-hop and martial arts (among other things!) into this awesome dance routine which he developed in Colombia in the 1990s. The pumping music with fast and slow rhythms offers a great soundtrack to pair with this high energy dance class.

Check below for more info...
  • DETAILS: Monday night, 7:30-8:30pm. Vivace Performance Company. Canham Way, Greenwood.
  • COST: $12.00 per class (discounts available for 5 or 10 pass purchases, first trial class is FREE!)
  • TEACHER: Simone Dodd
  • BRING: Nothing but your sexy self and a party attitude. Wear sneakers and be prepared to shimmy and shake ;)
  • BEST BITS: Simone's fun loving energy and ability to 'spice it up' with a few quick steps definitely kept me on my toes! Seeing the whole room full of older ladies confidently getting their groove on, doing their best to follow the quick step routines and happily enjoying it really made my day complete.

Bec's Personal Training - Fun in the Sun!

Deciding to start hitting up any and every fitness option in Perth is one thing, but actually getting organised to find and attend them all is quite another...!

Once committing to my goal I started thinking through the resources most immediately available to me to make it happen. I figured that contacting my nearest and dearest friends would be a great way to start. My gorgeous girlfriends Amy and Bianca have become awesome fitness devotees in recent years, testing out everything from BoxFit to personal training! They were definitely my first point of call when taking on this endeavour. They invited me to join them at their Saturday morning personal training session with Bec in East Vic Park.

Bec lead us through an awesome hour commencing with a jog and encompassing a range of activities. We rotated through a circuit which included weights, boxing, ab, arm and leg work. The session she takes with my friends is just perfect for them. There is usually just four females plus instructor in attendance and the PT is beautifully tailored to suit their needs. One participant was recovering from an injury and Bec was extremely attentive, she modified the activity at each station for the girl's unique circumstance - exactly the level of care and expertise you hope for from a personal trainer. She also took the group through some great stretches at the end. Really worthwhile doing lots of stretching following a session like this because we used a variety of weights for different exercises.

A PERSONAL TRAINER is a fitness professional who develops a fitness program and assessment for their clients. They motivate by setting goals and providing feedback. PT's may also educate their clients on nutrition, general health and wellbeing.

Check below for more info on this session...
  • DETAILS: Saturday morning, 9:30-10:30am. John McMillan park off Kent Street in East Vic Park.
  • COST: $15.00 per individual
  • TEACHER: Bec
  • BRING: A decent-sized towel for exercises done lying on the grass. A hat and sunnies are a definite must, especially as we come into the hot summer months. Also recommend applying suncream before the session gets cracking or alternatively wearing a good sun-blocker shirt to cut out UV rays. Water bottle is obviously a must.
  • BEST BITS: Being outside in the sunshine! Bec brought along all the equipment we needed from boxing gloves and pads to various weights, it was awesome to have all of that provided. Thanks for an awesome morning Bec!
